On June 26, 2010,  a Sankt Hans celebration will be held at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas.   There will be a bon fire with the traditional send-off of a witch  to Bloksbjerg and singing of the Danish Midsummer song.  We will also bake “snobroed” over the fire.     It is recommended that you arrive after 3 p.m. Around 5 p.m.  people will start eating.   It is a public beach so, of course,  you can show up anytime and stay as long as you like.   Please bring your own food.   Any questions, please call Oda at 858-254-6295.

We are hosting the Danish Lawn Program which is the day after Grundlovsdag (Danish Constitution Day).   Come and show your Danish red and white colors.  People come and go as they need to.  Danish food will be sold and a group of lego enthusiasts will show their talent.  You may get a chance to play with lego yourself.

At 2 p.m. we will have entertainment on the stage.  Performers include: 

- Niels Lund will sing Danish and English songs including sing-along for children and adults. 
-The Scandinavina Children Folkdancers and Balboa Park Dancers will dance folkdancing
-Anne Goldman will tell a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale.

We will sell Danish food from noon to 4 p.m.  Danish sausage (medisterpoelse), meatballs (frikadeller), red cabbage (roedkaal), cucumber salad, and pastry (kringle) will be on sale from the cottage, so bring your appetite!

Please be aware that the Rock and Roll Marathon will take place on the same day as our Lawn Program.  There will be roadclosures in the downtown area, including Southbound 163 Freeway.  Therefore,  your usual route to Balboa Park may not be possible.    To help you plan your best route, here is a link that tells you about road closures including freeways and ramps.    http://san-diego.competitor.com/course/road-closures

The House of Denmark will be turned into a Danish Bakery, offering all kinds of deliscious baked goods.  Anyone who has participated in this fundraiser the last couple of years knows that it is very enjoyable and quite successful.  We hope many of you can join us and/or contribute to the baked goods.  It is a great day for the whole family to be at Balboa Park.  There will be lots of ethnic entertainment, including Scandinavian Children Folkdancers.

House of Denmark will be hosting the April Member Meeting with a Danish style Potluck on April 17th at 4 pm. We are gearing this meeting more toward the mature members (ok- we’re all a little childish sometimes) so this one will not be what you would consider “child friendly”. In honor of Queen Margrethe’s 70th birthday we will be planning something fun to test your Royal knowledge.

Join us for a fun Spring celebration.  This is a family event.  We will make traditional Danish Spring and Easter crafts.  We will make gaekkebreve, Easter chickens and lambs that you can take home to decorate with.

There will be lagkage (layered cake) and coffee, tee, and juice.

The event is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

This year House of Denmark will celebrate Fastelavn at San Dieguito Park in Del Mar on Sunday Feb. 21st at 2:30 to 4:30. Last years celebration at the same venue was a great success and we hope to repeat it again this year. Cost for the event is $5 per person (children free) and $3 for parking.
